Last week the requirements for stage 2 meaningful use were published in the federal registry. The public has 60 days to respond and the changes won't likely take effect until 2014 at the earliest. The document is 455 pages long and in summary: more core objectives are required; the thresholds for current core objectives have been raised; and there are numerous new objectives. Dr. John Halamka (Geek Doctor) was kind enough to post a summary of the changes in a PowerPoint (mu2.pptx.ppt) presentation.

This will be very challenging for clinicians to incorporate more changes into their workflow and will EHR vendors charge additional fees to make all of the changes? Will the federal government really be ready for the submission of many more quality reports and other documentation related to meaningful use. What do you think the challenges will be?

Thanks for posting Bob. This looks like a very positive and, so far, fairly popular proposal. It's good to see the meaningful use criteria move closer towards clinical effectiveness rather than just requiring the pieces of the puzzle to be put in place. Speaking to some of the CIOs at HIMSS, I did get the feeling they were already overwhelmed but they do see this work as important and necessary. The main challenge I think they are finding is recruiting and keeping good health informatics workers.
