Discussion Forum for Health Informatics Professionals and Students

Hi all,
I would like to get your comments on the pros and cons of distance learning in health informatics courses.
Is it advantageous to go for a full time course in health informatics?
Thanks in advance

If you have sufficient time then pursue Full time course. If you are busy with your profession, i suggest www.ehcfsmi.edu.in

I am looking for an online MSc that is reasonably priced and flexible. Can anyone help?

Arthur,
You can try Faculty of Healthcare Informatics, University of Bath, UK;
http://www.bath.ac.uk/catalogues/2002-2003/xx/hcipcat-pg.htm

and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. http://www.rcsed.ac.uk

I did my MSc in Health Informatics from these places. That time these two organizations jointly conducted the course. Now, RCSEd has teamed up with University of Edinburgh

Hope this helps.

Dr Sanyal,

Thank you very much. I looked at the Edinburg program. It is very flexible although cost is still a worry for a developing country person.

Hi Sanjoy,

I am thinking about the Edinburgh course. Do you recommend it? Is it useful for someone practicing in the NHS?

Many thanks for any info you have for me!

Sandhya,
I presume there are 2 parts to your qs; one is about distance learning, and the other is about full time course
The second part has been adequately answered by Dr Athar Haque.
I am addressing the first part of your question - about distance learning.

The pros and cons of DL are determined by individual learning characteristics of people. People with a certain set of learning characteristics find DL suitable. On the other hand, people with correspondingly opposing set of characteristics find face-to-face learning suitable.

I have published a full research paper on this subject, but I don't want to bother you with reading the full 66-page paper! Instead I have attached a small file to this message that will help you to determine your suitability (or otherwise) for distance learning.

Hope this helps

Pros:
1. Online nursing informatics programs are now better than ever. Instructors are now specially trained for distance teaching and presentations, and technology has come a long way.
2. Cost, time, and distance are often the three biggest advantages. Work full time while you learn.
Cons:
1. Cons include more motivation is needed to complete the degree, as well as a strong personal drive to eliminate distractions at home while studying.
2. No human interaction with classmates.
