Mentors/internships

Hello everyone

My name is Egbe and I am new in Informatics field. I have a Bachelors degree in Health Administration in 2014 and I am working on my Masters degree in Health Informatics. Now I do not have any clinical or informatics background. I have zero background in Health Informatics or anything related to medical records or ICD 9 OR 10. My first thought was to volunteer at a hospital in the medical records department which I start in May. But what else do I need to do to get my foot in the door. I graduate with my degree next May. Please any help suggestion on how to get an internship with basic basic experience will really help. I am open to suggestions and desperate. I am also based in the DC, MD area.

Thank you in advance

  • Egbe, Are you pursuing your Masters degree in Health Informatics from any university located in the DC Metro area (DC, VA ,MD)? If the answer is yes then you can join the National Capital Area (NCAA) chapter of Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) as a student. Membership is free for students. They have an excellent Mentorship program for graduating students in health informatics where they pair you up with mentors from the industry. Go to the HIMSS.ORG website and check out the details in the NCAA chapter web page. Let me know if you want more info. Good Luck.
  • Further to my earlier reply - the local chapter of HIMSS is NCA not NCAA.
  • The HIMSS suggestion is a good one. What kind of role are you looking for when you graduate?
