Intro to Health IT

Before starting my college RN BSN course on this topic and utilizing the Health Informatics website to research this topic, I did not have anyinkling of what health care

informatics was. I assumed it had to do with technology and health care, go figure. Of course this wasn't wrong, but I did learn that there is so much more to it than that. As

defined by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, health informatics is the interdisciplinary study of the design, development, adoption, and application of IT-based innovations

in healthcare services delivery, management, and planning. (National Library of Medicine, 2016). It dawned on me how dependent on technology as a health care society we

are. What a wonderful resource technology has been to us. As nurses we used to have to cripple check our medications before administration. Now, we simply do a check at

medication distribution system of our using and compare it to our scheduled meds. We do another check at the bedside and when we scan our patient and our meds at the

bedside thats our technology doing our "third safety" check. What a headache this has saved us and also kept us from unintentionally harming many patients. I would

definitely say this is an effective IT innovation that has been implemented in almost all hospitals including mine. This has been very important content to read and understand

because from the example given you can see we use this technology every day in the work place. Just transitioning from paper charts to Electronic was a huge IT

improvement all thanks to health care informatics. I can use this information to appreciate the new technologies that come our way changing our practice. Instead of being

frustrated with the change knowing it is most likely for the better. Whether that better is for patient safety or convenience us nurses must be willing to adapt to change. A

specific concept that stuck out to me, was the concept in Unit 1 Friedmans concept. This concept states,  “A person working in partnership with an information resource is

‘better’ than that same person unassisted”. (Health Informatics Forum, 2017). I couldn't agree with this more. This goes back to my prior example of the electronic medication

safety checks at the bedside. This is a  person, specifically a nurse in health care working with and information resource. This has been so much better than the same person

unassisted.

  • This is a very nice article, in this field we all had doubts for starters but after being exposed to what it entails, u are then good to go.
