Discussion Forum for Health Informatics Professionals and Students

We have just began our EHR Management but there is this suggestion that there is the need to continue printing the records and preparing the hardcopies of every patients' record and filling them. Any suggestion as to how to handling this situation.

It is better to keep important hard copies of discharge summary, Reffereral letter, consent form etc., coz even if emr backup fails the patient can be treated by seeing discharge summary

I don't know think it's necessary at all to keep hard copies. If you're using an accredited EMR solution, it will have patient data backup no matter what. It's much safer to keep your important data in electronic form, as it protects against many things such as fire, floods, theft etc.

The company I work for has a utility that can help you (www.medcentricity.com). You can find the information on the page entitled "Record Digitization." Additionally, I'm not sure what kind of EHR you're using, but ours is Web-based, so all of your patient data is accessible from any web-accessible location.

Anyway, if you haven't found your solution yet, you might want to take a moment to visit the above address. The website has an 800 number as well on the contact page if you want more information.

can you explain to me how the system will keep the patient data even if the software is down. how can i make sure if i have an EMR that the data will be kept safe no matter what. I mean i can keep have a great system and database but the risk of Virus attack is there.

I am grateful for the Discussion so far. However, I wish the discussion can still be broaden.
The issue of virus, breakdown of the network system, crushing of the hard disks, etc needs to be considered.
One thing that I think we usually lack is planning.
Before the beginning of every system, there is the need for us to critically do future scanning to see the possible causes of breakdown and make sure that alternatives are put in place so that in times of failure of plan A, you can use plan B.
