Chris,
Can we develop a list of journals on Health Informatics somewhere here?

I need some info from our friends that reside in developing countries. In the West medical informatics run into ground because we have not mastered to get any kind of standard into our hospitals as the major source of prime medical data.
If we could somehow visualize that we do not have to go through that in developing countries since they are capable of jumping one, two or three medical-IT-generations we might be able to define goals much easier there than back home in developed countries.
On question is i.e. whether jumping forward an storing a person's medical data on USB devices could run down cost and improve efficiency enormously. USB are having today so much storage capacity that you can acutally load data depository, medical software, pahrmacological software, the IDC-10 DB directly on a USB rather than trying to get hospitals get organized for mass data for which there is neither a budget nor an economic or health care will? Why not to move straight forward to the consumer? it worked in China with Mobile Phones, so in othe developing countries. Why not in taking care on one's medical data pesonally?

Respected dr. Gil,
I live in a developing country, and I am agree with you on the provision of USB at each level of the hospital for their data storage. We are taking health informatics seriously In our country. Most of the hospitals have database, EHR, and etc. But still we are woundering becouse all these hospitals are not linked, and most of the doctors are unaware of using latest IT tool for health managment and provision of health services.

Hi Dr. Gil, this sounds so wonderful and the beauty of it is the ease with which it can be implemented. I've thought of the people in the poor rural african communities who have made an effort to own a mobile phone. You know if they are made to understand the importance and usefulness of having their primary and medical records readly available in a USB, they will purchase them. I wish i had seen this article before deciding on my master's thesis. Am working on developing a HIS for reporting MNCH interventions at the community level and then linking it to the national system. Many mothers actually die from childbirth causes at the facilities because the recieving doctors/nurses lack primary information on the patients. By the time they finish foraging for this information, it's too late to save the woman in labor. Imagine the benefits of storing these information in a USB for every expectant mother during her first (and maybe only) visit to the clinic. She keeps it with her and has it whenever she travels. The inforamation that shouldnt be seen by everyone will of course be secured with a password at the stage of DB creation. I will still look at a possibility of including this to my work and let you know.
We can computerize systems, but hosptal systems are not linked, most rural facilities lack computers and most health personnel lack IT knowledge. But with this useful info in a USB, its just a matter of inserting it in a laptop, desktop or PDA computer and one will be able to retrieve primary and medical information about a patient. Thanks so much Dr. Gil for this brilliant idea. Hope it materialises somehow somewhere. Best,
Ebone.

What do you mean by 'it worked in China with Mobile Phones, so in othe developing countries.' ? What kind of mobile phone usage? In the field of healthcare?
