I am not sure of MBA in HI - maybe you meant masters in HI. The scope of jobs can be very broad, anything from general management, to research and evaluation, to application development. A lot would depend on what your particular interests and skills are.

Hi everyone.

I tend to agree with the consensus thus far in this discussion. Health informatics in Australia is sector still in its infancy. While major inroads have been paved, there is still a lack of interoperability within the sector and even though there is a national body that attempts to coordinate Health IT implementation (NEHTA), it has met with mixed success.

Health informatics jobs tend to be in flux. They tend to be project based which means that they are not permanent positions ie. last 6months - 1.5 years. There are positions such as data coordinators and application support specialists that tend to trend towards more stable permanent status. But positions such as business analysts, technical specialists, implementation leaders and project managers tend to temporary.

Also I have found that the health informatics sector is very hard to break into. Ultimately you need to move where the jobs are. I live in a regional area and have found all HI jobs tend to be focused in our State's capital city. In today's age of instantaneous communication and digital information aggregation technologies, one would think that physical location is no longer a barrier to the formation and coordination of project teams. But it seems old concepts and habits die hard.

With regards to being in the health industry. Muzaffar is correct. You do not need to have experience in the industry but it is definitely preferred and is advantageous when apply for positions. I am a registered nurse and have completed my Master of Health Informatics.

Having technical competence is adequate for positions such purely technical like system admins, ICT technicians, etc. However having a clinical background gives you an understanding and experience with work processes, medical and health knowledge, and organisational structure and culture that a person not in the industry would not grasp initially. And is vital for clinical informatics project work, as it brings much needed clinical perspective at all stages of the clinical information systems life cycle (ensuring the needs of clinical stakeholders are met).

Agree with your analysis. I have been with a medical elearning company for more than a year now. Now attached as a Business analyst with them.
- Medical education- including management and content creation for it- is an exciting field.- Medical services- Companies like Wipro, Infosys, Microsoft would be a good bet for the talented people.Others can try startups. - The Best- Start your own services. Pick up any process in the healthcare setup, and dream up a better way to do it using technology. Create jobs instead of looking for them.
Cheers,
Neel.

Health Informatics basically helps you understand and convert the manual healthcare processes to the automated ones whether it be clinical or the non clinical. Entire healthcare industry is now considering IT solutions as a major ingredient in boosting up their narrow profit margins. So all those aspirants who are into Health Informatics and have specialized in the same area can well look out for positions of Business Analysts in companies that have good pool of healthcare projects. In india companies like Infosys, Wipro, Syntel, CTC are looking out for such professionals.

Hi all,
Nice to see you here. I am currently a postgraduate student(MS) in Northeastern University. My subject is Health Informatics. I thought this subject would be a great chance for me applying my IT knowledge into this area, but I am a little worried about the future of it. The vacancy of relating jobs seems not as much as IT jobs. If I work hard in this 2 years program, can I find some working opportunities in this field? I intend to work as software/programming role in Health informatics. Is there any chances for it? Could any one tell me which pathway is the best one so far in your opinion, and any compulsary courses I should take to continue this pathway.

Thanks so much for your patience and suggestions, if you have any.

Regards!
Kaiyu

my MSN: zhaokaiyu@hotmail.com, we can discuss this through email or msn if you wish. :)

I am working on my bachelor of medicine degree, and expect to earn it next year.Highly interested in IT related fields, but incapable to get a satisfactory job in my country because of lack of experience and a formal degree in IT.So I'm thinking about study in the US to earn a Master's degree on HI, hoping to take advantage of my medical degree in combination with my Cisco&Microsoft certifications....but I am really confused by the emerging discipline of "health informatics", don't know what's its career path,or what kind of life if I become an HI pro..
