Hi everyone, first i'd like to thank you for sharing your insights and experiences about the field. :D

I''ve been hearing about healthcare/nursing informatics for quite a while and it caught my attention because i've always enjoyed working with computers, especially before i entered nursing. So i'm really looking into this as a possible career option. For those sharing their experiences, may I humbly request you to please offer more explanations/descriptions? This would greatly help newbies like me to have a clearer grasp of what the field entails. :) For instance, those who have been researchers/analysts/consultants/sales agents/etc, can you give concrete examples of the processes/projects you have done? What sorts of skills did you employ on your job? What tips can you give to those who are also setting out to go into this field?

At this point, i consider myself clueless but i'm hoping your comments will eventually augment my knowledge about the field. We are, after all, in the digital age and I believe that the healthcare informatics industry has a great deal of potential waiting to ripen.

Hi Everyone,

This discussion is really og great help to beginners in the HI field.
I am basically from medical background, (Physician Assistant with 2 years of work experience in Cardiology with Dr. K.M.Cherian, Chennai, India).

I have completed Master of Information and Communication Technology, Major: Health Informatics from University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.
Currently, I am looking for job opportunities relating to HI in Melbourne.

As already discussed here, I find it really difficult to look for structured job descriptions in jobsearch websites. There are no particular designations to search for HI jobs.

Could anyone please guide me to do better job search for HI careers.

It would be of great help to me if anyone could guide me through.

Great topic, something I've asked myself many times already in my young career in informatics. It seems like some of my career options, should I complete a Masters degree in HI, are:

Work in the Informatics department in a hospital - project management, system development, staff education, etc.
Work for the government/ministry - data, statistics, reports, policies
Work for a vendor - sales, education
Work as a consultant - sales, education
Work in a university/college - education

Right now, that's all I've got but I'm certain there are many positions that fall under each of those categories. I look forward to hearing more ideas on HI careers.

HIM openings in Chicago
I came across Advocate Health Care in Chicago and they have openHealth Information Management Jobs if anyone finds this helpful. Not sure if this was the correct place to post this. I just know that I have been searching forums, jobboards and career pages of places I would like to work to find a HIM jobs.
