Discussion Forum for Health Informatics Professionals and Students

We've recently been looking at Open Source EMRs in developing countries.

Anyone using Open Source software for running EMRs? Which products do you use? How are you finding them?

Any issues regarding, training, support, etc?

Hi Shelby,
Dr. Nicolette de Keizer (n.f.keizer@amc.uva.nl) from AMC, Amsterdam has done a lot in this field. She may be of a good help.

Farhad.

Hi Shelby - I am interested in collaborating on an evaluation - that is the area my PhD research is in too.

Hi All,

I work for eHEALTH magazine in India. We are following developments in this area closely and would like to cover best practices, interesting initiatives and the like, especially in developing countries.
Articles/insightful stories are welcome!

I'm going to show my ignorance - what is 'EMR'?

Hi Sarah,

EMR stands for Electronic Medical Records - i.e. the computer systems used by hospitals and clinics for storing patients records.

I am not using it, but OpenMRS (www.openmrs.org) seems to be increasingly widely used in many African countries. They have been participating in the HISA2008 South African Health Informatics Association conference in Durban this past week, and while I could not get to many of the sessions, there does seem to be an increasing amount of use, interest and development.
At present it is not fully open source, but there seems to have been a lot of work this week on identifying new modules to be added and ways of moving more of it to fully open source.

A quite complete list of open source medical software, including EMRs, can be found here:

BTW: I am wondering if there's anyone in this forum who's dealing with PHR/EMRs in China? I am interesting to meet people who are based in China and work in the health IT field.

At eHEALTH magazine, we would like to give greater coverage to EMR use in China. Can anybody suggest an expert in this domain who could write an article for us?
